NEW ALBUM RELEASE
MEET JOE LEADER
Joe Leader was born into a family of international musicians, and grew up immersed in the passion of musical performance. His mother, concert pianist Lucille Orden Leader, taught Joe to perform in the spirit of the ‘Romantic’ style. To ‘make atmosphere’ with every note, every movement and every breath. Joe learned how to communicate emotions and feelings to an audience, creating an atmosphere so that people can live in the passion of each note, each phrase and each song, taking them on an emotional musical journey.
Initially, being exposed to classical music as a young boy, Joe soon developed his interest in saxophone and Jazz. Together with his band at school, he won the “Daily Telegraph Young Jazz Awards” at the tender age of sixteen.
He then studied saxophone privately at London’s Guildhall School of Music, and went on to the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Joe’s first-class honours degree in Music Technology from LCMM, developed his auditory awareness, and gave him the technical expertise to produce his own albums and live shows, to an exponentially high standard. Joe’s well-rounded studies gave him a solid grounding in music as well as in the intricacies of music recording and production.
As his professional experience grew, Joe worked with such great artists as Andrew Lloyd Webber, Dame Kiri TeKanawa, Linda Brava, Pharrell Williams, Boyzone’s Stephen Gately and The Symphony Orchestra of India. He has also performed at prestigious festivals at the South Bank and in South Africa and France.
Joe’s vast travels and experience enabled him to set up and lead a 20-piece showband, called “The Joe Leader Collective.” This incredible showband launched at London’s Café de Paris to an enthralled audience.
The show included performances from international vocalists, Zara McFarlane and Noel McCalla, instrumentalists, break-dancers and tango dancers. The show even included a family performance with Joe on sax, his mum Lucille on Piano, and sister Serena on violin. Joe’s powerful showband featured at many high-profile charity and gala events across the country, playing an incredible variety of music.
Joe‘s father, a Doctor and keen martial artist, introduced Joe to the Japanese martial art, Aikido from a young age. The rigorous mental and physical training gave Joe the confidence and balance on stage, to perform from the heart, with a powerful presence.
Joe was mentored by two great Sensei’s, and after 20 years, attained a 2nd Degree Black Belt.
They say that the sword of a Japanese Samurai warrior was an extension of his soul.
In the same way, the saxophone is an extension of Joe’s soul.
For him, this means combining the skills of his martial arts with his musical training. Joe trains his mind, body and spirit in order to focus his whole being on creating, recording and performing music from the heart.
After some great times leading the show band, Joe decided to change direction and concentrate on his solo career as a recording artist, starting in the Smooth Jazz genre. He put together a smaller 8-piece band and launched his solo career with a fabulous gig, entitled “Seductive Sax”, in June 2011. The gig was held at one of London’s top Jazz clubs in Chelsea – The Pheasantry.
Joe released the live recording of that magical night as his debut album, entitled “Seductive Sax”. Endorsed by Dave Koz, the album reached No.19 in US Smooth Jazz charts, at which time Joe was invited to tour with ‘Dave Koz and Friends at Sea’, alongside other great saxophonists, Gerald Albright, Kirk Whalum and Mindi Abair.
As a Légère, Rovner and Herclues sponsored artist, Joe’s incredible career has taken him all over the world, performing on stage with such amazing performers as Joss Stone, Sandie Shaw, Beverley Knight and Joseph Calleja. He was the featured saxophonist with Italian Pop legend, Eros Ramazzotti, on a four-year Arena World Tour, entitled, ‘Perfetto’ – performing at such prestigious venues as the Verona Arena, Vienna Stadthalle, The Barclays Centre NY, and LA Microsoft Theatre.
Joe’s extensive touring has given him the confidence and inspiration to develop his own unique compositions, and create an original Cinematic Saxophone album, ‘Healing the Heart’.
