Cape Town V&A Waterfront - 2011 - ‘Amazing Grace’
Joe spent many summers during his formative years in Cape Town, South Africa, where his family originally lived, before moving to the UK.
During his time in Cape Town, Joe was introduced to the local music scene, and drew much inspiration from the wonderful musicians in the area. In his twenties, Joe was lucky enough to meet one of Cape Town’s most influential musicians, pianist and band leader, Camillo Lombard. Camillo invited to Joe to study and perform in Cape Town, and even secured him private lessons with some of Cape Town’s greatest saxophone players.
JOE & CAMILLO
It was a unique experience, as after a full day of private master classes and study at UCT (University of Cape Town), Camillo would invite Joe to perform at the hottest music venues in town! As Joe describes, “Cape Town and Camillo helped me to find my musical soul, and to flow effortlessly with any style of music.”
JOE AT THE JAZZATHON
At the end of his time in Cape Town, Joe was featured at the prestigious Cape Town Jazz Festival, called the ‘Standard Bank Jazzathon 2002’, hosted at Cape Town’s beautiful V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre. This was a seminal moment for Joe, as he described this as his “graduation present from Camillo!” Even more special, was that Joe’s 90-year-old grandmothers were there to see his final performance!
A decade later, Joe was invited to feature again with Camillo and his band at the prestigious V&A Waterfront Amphitheatre, for a special Gospel Christmas concert. A spontaneous and inspired rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’ was captured on video, for everyone to enjoy!
